Monthly Spearfishing Report December 2008

Good conditions experienced on the north coast at the start of the month with reasonable visibility and light winds making for ideal spearfishing weather.  The sea temperatures approaching the twenty-four Celsius mark which is very good for gamefish along the Natal coast. A number of rainy over-cast days during the month but the conditions fairly settled wind wise. The south coast once again suffering the effects of heavy rains that fell mid-month with all the rivers open once again and inshore visibility zero due to this. Only the odd westerly front coming up from the Cape to cool things down from the very hot and sticky Durban summer days.

The Umdloti stretch producing some cuda and queen mackerel but sharks a problem if you are out deep on a shore dive. Some wahoo being taken off Stud Rock and out deep off Umdloti. A jet-ski fisherman hooked a queen mackerel off Umdloti in 30m of water whilst trawling at sixteen kmh for wahoo. No 1 producing some good bags of fish with some big kingfish being landed. Plenty of sharks operating out here so be on the look-out if you are diving in marginal viz. The Jex Estate - Tinley Manor stretch producing some good bags of bottoms and gamefish.

The summer gamefish run is in full swing with Milibangalala providing some exciting spearfishing for some of the Midlands spearos who were there recently. Hardous Bouwer managing to land his first sailfish which tipped the scales at thirty five kilograms and is a good sized fish. The sharks and potato bass adding plenty of excitement with any speared fish fair game.

Sodwana Bay

Very busy as is normal for this time of year at Sodwana with loads of holiday-makers enjoying the xmas break. A number of windy days but clean warm water providing good conditions with water temps of 25 + Celsius. The dorado run has been very good this year as has the billfish with a lot of sailfish landed. Very few cuda coming out but could be that most fishermen are going for dorado and sailfish. Some night charters targeting broadbill swordfish having success.

Shark Attack File

For those spearos interested in researching shark attacks, here is a web site with recorded shark attacks. .

Fatal Shark Attack

During December 2008, Darryl Kriel was attacked by a shark whilst spearfishing at Chidenguele in southern Mozambique. He was spearfishing with a local spearo on a shore dive when the attack took place. He was in shallow water when he was bitten on the upper part of his leg. The attack was fatal and our condolences go to his family and friends.

Cape News

Poor spearfishing conditions along the Cape coast with black south easters blowing and unseasonable heavy rains dirtying up the inshore seas. The Bonito Open postponed until February next year due to poor conditions. The tuna grounds offering very little in the way of fish and with the big boats using three hundred litres plus of fuel per trip it is a costly exercise when no fish are landed. Lets hope the weather settles down and the fish come back on the bite.

Guy and myself would like to take this opportunity to wish all readers a happy and prosperous 2009.

Safe diving, John.
