Tiger Rockcod to Red Roman

Tiger Rockcod

Tiger rockcod B.F.10kg
Divers used to call this fish the eelskins rockcod because of the many shot in the eelskins area out at aliwal shoal. During the winter months of may/june, they move onto the 24m reefs in the aliwal/deep scottburgh area. They are a fairly aggressive fish and are normally easy to approach. They do not seem as common as in the late eighties.

The red tomato rockcod can be found all along the natal coast. They do not stray far from their holes and have the ability to squeeze into the smallest of cracks. Most fish encountered are too small to shoot.

Yellow Belly Rockcod

Yellowbelly Rockcod
On any hot spot there will invariably be a nice yellow belly. The trick is to find his cave and use a cave gun with a torch. On occasion they will let you get a shot in whilst at the entrance to their cave.

Yellow Tail Rockcod

Yellowtail or Yellow edge rockcod
In the water they are a light blue colour with a yellow trim which quickly fades once they are boated. They are normally swimming around above the reef and will come to investigate if you lie motionless on the bottom. Seeing them means the reef has not been dived for awhile. Bodasing has some good spots for this fish.

Red Roman

Red Roman B.F.3kg
The roman is a cape water fish and comes as far up the coast as the lower transkei. They will approach you when lying on the bottom with bigger fish being solitary and possibly hiding in a cave.
